Digital Technology as the Main Key in the Industrial Era 4.0


binus.ac.id, Industry 4.0 or the fourth industrial revolution is a term commonly used for the level of development of the technology industry in the world. For this fourth level, the world is focused on digital technologies. Before learning about this level further, it is important to know the previous stages of the industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution came with the emergence of mechanisation, steam power, and hydropower that occurred around the 18th and 19th centuries. This mechanisation was then followed by the second industrial revolution, which was related to mass production and assembly lines using electricity. Meanwhile, the industrial revolution is related to the development of electronics, information technology systems, and automation, which leads to the fourth industrial revolution, namely the development of cyber physical systems.

Areas Developed In Industrial Technology 4.0

In general, Industry 4.0 describes the growing trend towards automation and data exchange in technology and processes in the manufacturing industry. These trends include the Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet of Things (IioT), cyber physical systems (CPS), artificial intelligence (AI), smart factories, cloud computing systems, and so on. Even in the Industrial Internet of Things design, this industrial level creates a manufacturing system where the machines in the factory are equipped with wireless connectivity and sensors to monitor and visualize the entire production process. Even autonomous decision-making can also be done directly by these machines.

Meanwhile, wireless connectivity and machine augmentation will greatly advance with the full rollout of 5G. Thus, this will provide faster response times, enabling real-time communication between systems. The fourth industrial revolution is also related to digital twin technology or digital twin technology tea. This technology can create virtual versions of installations, processes and applications that exist in the real world. This virtual version can then be tested to make it more effective, useful and cost-effective. Interestingly, this virtual version can be created in the real world and linked, via the internet of things, . This allows cyber-physical systems to communicate and cooperate with each other and make data exchanges in real time. This technology can also be combined and processed automatically for Industry 4.0 manufacturing. In addition, this automation includes interconnectivity between processes, transparency of information, and technical assistance for decentralized decisions.

In short, industry 4.0 is all about digital transformation. This industrial era will allow automation of equipment with combined systems that can work together with each other. The technology will also help troubleshoot and track processes, while increasing productivity in business and manufacturing at scale.
